Hafnarborg operates an Artist-in-Residence programme providing an artist’s apartment with a workspace on the 3rd floor of the museum, located at Strandgata 34. The residency programme has been in operation since 1986 and is the oldest of its kind in Iceland. It is primarily intended for international artists who are staying temporarily in Hafnarfjörður to work on creative projects.
The apartment is approximately 80 square meters and is divided into a kitchen, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, and workspace. It is fully equipped with essential amenities, such as bedding, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi. Its location in the center of Hafnarfjörður, near the town’s main bus station, makes it easy for guests to travel.

Hafnarborg accepts applications for the artist residency all year round. The residency is usually booked one year in advance, and since the museum has only one apartment available, we can often accept fewer applicants than we would like.
We therefore emphasize that applicants ensure their applications are complete and in accordance with the instructions. Please note that applications that do not meet the requirements will not be considered.
To apply for a stay at the residency, the following form must be filled out.
The residency period is for one month at a time, starting from the 2nd of each month. The fee is 500 euros, which must be paid three months prior to arrival.
